Periodontal (Gum) Therapies

Many patients who avoid the dentist have dental anxiety that stems from a negative experience. Unfortunately, missing too many dental visits can result in serious oral health conditions, including gum disease. Our team strives to turn our patients’ experiences into positive ones that become a welcome part of their overall healthcare routines.

At Toothsavers Dentists, we provide comfortable and effective gum therapies to help patients avoid tooth loss and the health complications that arise from periodontal disease. Our dental cleans are gentle and effective with each being customised to meet the needs of each patient.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection that develops in the gums and bone that support teeth.

Gingivitis, or early gum disease, is characterised by red, inflamed gums that may bleed while brushing, flossing or eating. Periodontitis, or advanced gum disease, is characterised by inflammation, bleeding, gum recession, pain or sensitivity or foul breath odour.

Over time, the infection can move from the gumline to the roots and bone that support the teeth. The infection causes bone loss and may result in tooth mobility that requires extraction.

Recent research has linked periodontal disease with systemic health conditions such as heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, low birthweight babies and diabetes. Our dentists strive to help patients gain control of their periodontal conditions to support both oral health and whole-body health.

Painful Gums? Our Team Can Help

In the early stages, gum disease can be reversible with improved home care, and professional dental cleans to remove tartar and bacteria. Patients will also be advised on methods to improve home care that complements our professional care. Our partnership with our patients includes oral hygiene instruction, patient education and recommendations for follow-up dental visits.

For advanced gum disease, a series of dental cleanings designed to remove tartar and bacteria from the gum line and below will help the tissue heal. We offer anaesthetic to make deep cleanings more comfortable for our patients. Rather than the typical, twice-yearly cleans, patients recovering from periodontal disease may benefit from three to four periodontal maintenance appointments per year. Our dentists will discuss your treatment with you and help you make a choice that benefits your smile.

At-Home Dental Hygiene Recommendations

Most people know that they should brush and floss every day, but following the recommended process will improve results.

Brush twice daily for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste. Angle the bristles toward the gumline at a 45-degree angle and be sure to give attention to all areas of the teeth, including the chewing surfaces.

Floss teeth each day using dental floss that fits comfortably between the teeth. As you move from tooth to tooth, use a fresh area of the floss. Rather than popping the floss quickly in and out between teeth, use the floss like a squeegee, removing as much plaque as possible.
