QIP or Quality Innovation Performance is an accreditation given to a dental practice that has demonstrated its commitment to providing excellent patient care. A practice that has achieved this voluntary accreditation has integrated National Safety and Quality Health Services into its existing systems and is dedicated to continually improving its standards as part of an ongoing process.

Why Should I Choose a QIP Accredited Dental Practice?

By choosing a QIP accredited practice, you gain confidence and peace of mind from knowing you will receive the very highest standards of clinical care, protecting your safety and your dental health. QIP Accreditation is a lengthy process, and it is a choice, not a requirement which demonstrates a practice’s commitment to their patients. QIP accreditation provides patients with complete transparency while ensuring privacy is always protected. When visiting an accredited practice, you have the right to be shown respect, to be kept fully informed about your treatment and to be involved in any decision-making processes.

At Toothsavers Dentists, our dentists and hygienists aim to provide the type of personalised dental treatment plans that prevent the loss of natural teeth. Of course, life sometimes has other plans. We recommend tooth extractions only as a last resort to protect the surrounding teeth and overall oral health.

Some situations that lead to teeth extractions:

  • Teeth broken-off at or below the gumline
  • Bone loss due to periodontal disease
  • Auto or sports accidents
  • Infection near the nerve
  • Orthodontic extractions

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Because of their location at the very back of the mouth, wisdom teeth (third molars) often become problematic, causing pain, overcrowding and pressure on nearby teeth. We evaluate young adults as part of the comprehensive dentistry we provide to our patients. A panoramic x-ray helps determine the growth of wisdom teeth and whether you might benefit from extractions.

Gentle Teeth Extractions

We provide comfortable dental extractions and supportive post-surgical care to improve the overall patient experience. For patients who are nervous, we offer nitrous oxide sedation to calm the nerves.

If you have a painful tooth or think you may need an extraction, we welcome you to get in touch with our Mount Annan dental clinic and our dentists will outline all of your options for treatment.

At Toothsavers Dentists, we make patient comfort a top priority from the simplest procedure to the most complex. Whether you are having periodontal therapy to address gum disease or having a troubled tooth extracted, we take every measure to ensure that patients experience as little discomfort as possible.

We apply anaesthetic slowly, and with great skill, first using a powerful topical anaesthetic, so patients feel little or any discomfort from the needle. Because we understand that many of our patients have anxiety when it comes to dentistry, nitrous oxide sedation is offered to help calm the nerves and induce relaxation.

Modern dentistry has developed, taking into account the needs of patients both physically and emotionally during procedures. If you have anxiety about your dental appointment, we encourage you to talk about it with our compassionate dentists, so that we can give you the best dental care possible.

Avoiding dental visits can result in more serious oral health conditions that may include extractions and replacing missing teeth. With routine active maintenance appointments, we are able to detect oral conditions in their early stages when they are easier to treat.

If you are in search of gentle dentistry in the Mount Annan area, we hope you will give Toothsavers Dentists a try. We consistently strive to make dentistry not just a pain-free free experience, but a welcome part of your overall wellness routine.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Yes. We offer a number of cosmetic dentistry solutions in our Mount Annan dental clinic to help patients feel confident in the appearance of their teeth and gums.

We will begin by performing a thorough evaluation, as it is essential to rule out any underlying conditions before proceeding with cosmetic dentistry. Diseases such as decay and gum disease can undermine the longevity of your restorative work.

We will ensure that patients get off to a solid start with a healthy mouth.

Next, we will discuss what you like about your smile and what you would prefer to change. If you have significant misalignment, starting treatment with Invisalign to correct teeth alignment, which will make treatment such as crowns and veneers more successful.

Teeth whitening prior to restoring the teeth gives patients an overall brighter result. Because dental crowns, veneers, fillings and boding do not whiten like the natural teeth.

Our dentists will work closely with you to design a smile that you feel proud to show off. The planning process takes time because precision is essential both for ideal aesthetic and function. Once we have the final design, many procedures, such as crowns and veneers, can be completed right here in our Mount Annan dental surgery in a single visit.

Dental Crowns and Bridges

Previously, it was necessary to place a temporary crown on a tooth to protect it while the lab created a final restoration, which could take up to two weeks or more. Temporary crowns are notorious for coming off and feeling a bit bulky because they are essentially placeholders and not of the same quality as final crowns.

Toothsavers Dentists have implemented the latest ceramic technology into our Mount Annan dental clinic to eliminate the need for a dental lab to create a final restoration. We use digital impressions to scan the tooth and upload the information into our computer-aided design software where your restoration design is processed before being sent to our in-house milling machine. Similar to a 3-D printer, the ceramic mill will create a durable, aesthetic crown out of a single piece of ceramic.

Because our dentists oversee the entire crown creation in a single visit, patients enjoy fewer complications from lab-related errors and can leave the dental clinic with their final restoration in one appointment.

Not only does this reduce the time patients spend in the chair, but it also provides beautiful results for cosmetic cases.

Our dentists can create indirect fillings and veneers in a single visit as well.

Periodontal (Gum) Therapies

An Examination Will Help Identify the Problem

Fresh breath is something many of us take for granted so it can be a shock to find out it isn’t quite as sweet smelling as we first thought. Bad breath or halitosis will affect everybody from time to time, usually as a result of something we’ve eaten. However persistent bad breath does require investigation, and this is where Tooth Savers can help. Common causes of bad breath include:

• Untreated tooth decay
• Gum disease
• Dry mouth or xerostomia
• Poor oral hygiene
• Poorly fitting dental appliances
• Yeast infection
• Smoking or using tobacco products

Bad breath may also be due to medical problems, for example, respiratory tract infections, liver or kidney problems, acid reflux or problems with your salivary glands.

An examination will enable us to determine if the cause is due to a dental related problem. If it is, we can recommend a suitable treatment plan to help restore fresh breath. If the problem is due to poor oral hygiene, our hygienist can professionally clean your teeth and will work with you to help improve your oral care at home. Often just using the correct brushing techniques or learning how to floss more effectively can make a huge difference. If you find flossing too difficult, our hygienist can recommend different tools to try, for example, interdental brushes can be very effective and easy-to-use.

If we cannot find any reason for your bad breath, we will suggest you book an appointment with your GP to find out if it’s being caused by an undiagnosed medical problem. If it’s possible the issue is due to medications, your GP may be able to prescribe something different, but it’s important not to stop prescription medications before discussing this with your doctor.

Preventive and General Dentistry

A healthy diet is essential for healthy teeth and gums. It’s important to ensure your diet contains plenty of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals that will help your body to fight infection and to repair damaged tissues, for example, gum tissue. Without a good diet, your body will be less able to fight infection leaving you more at risk of developing dental problems.

Tooth Friendly Drinks

If you can, ditch those sugary fizzy drinks in favour of plain water or milk. Try to limit your consumption of fresh fruit juice as this is often high in sugar and it’s better to eat the whole fruit.

What Are Some Easy Ways to Improve My Diet?

Having a healthy and tooth-friendly diet isn’t really that hard and often making just a few simple changes can help your dental health. With today’s busy lifestyles, it’s become much more common for people to snack frequently and while this can be a good way to boost energy levels it can affect your dental health.

How Snacking Affects Your Dental Health

This is because frequent snacking may increase the rate of acid erosion. Every time you eat something that is sugary or rich in carbohydrates, it causes your mouth to become more acidic for approximately half an hour afterwards. During this time your tooth enamel is softened, increasing your risk of tooth decay. Instead of reaching for something sweet or sticky in between meals, try to choose a more tooth-friendly option, for example, fresh, crunchy veggies, calcium-rich cheese or whole, fresh fruit.

If you would like to know more about how your diet affects your dental health, please call us on (02) 4647 5555. We are located at Shop 36, 11-13 Main St, Mount Annan NSW 2567.

Why Have a Prophylaxis Appointment (Scale & Clean)?

Prophylaxis is a very important preventative dental care treatment, and it’s a great idea to book your appointment at the same time as your general check-up. The idea of a prophylaxis is to remove hardened plaque or tartar from your teeth, reducing the risk that it will inflame and infect your gums. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that builds up on your teeth every day. If not thoroughly removed, plaque soon hardens into tartar. Unfortunately, tartar is very hard and cannot be removed by regular brushing and flossing, and the bacteria within it can infect and inflame your gums, increasing your risk of developing gum disease. Regular 6 monthly dental appointment for Active maintenance  can help to reduce your risk of gum disease, a condition that is extremely common and which can cause tooth loss and may even impact your general health.

What to Expect During Prophylaxis

This treatment should be comfortable and painless as our hygienist will use special hand tools to carefully scrape away any areas of tartar which can build up around the base of your teeth and just in between each tooth where it can be harder to reach with a toothbrush or with dental floss. Once all the tartar has been removed, they will gently polish your teeth, creating a nice smooth surface making it that much harder for bacteria to adhere. If you run your tongue over your teeth at the end of treatment, you should notice your teeth feel rather nice and clean. It’s possible they will also look a bit shinier and brighter than before as polishing helps remove some surface stains.

You can make an appointment online or over the phone on (02) 4647 5555. We are located at Shop 36, 11-13 Main St, Mount Annan NSW 2567.

For decades a material called amalgam would be routinely used to repair cavities in back teeth. Amalgam is a silver coloured material that is a combination of several metals including mercury. While this material is very hard wearing and cost-effective, it’s not necessarily the best and healthiest option for repairing teeth. Nowadays we can use more modern materials that are healthier for teeth and which will mend them almost invisibly. These materials are strong and hard wearing, and they have several advantages compared to amalgam, including the fact that they can look fantastic.

What are the Advantages of Amalgam Free Dentistry?

Amalgam-free dentistry is healthier for your teeth. This is because amalgam tends to flex when it comes under pressure, for example during chewing, and it can expand and contract whenever it comes into contact with hot or cold foods. The continual movement places pressure on the tooth, increasing the risk of microfractures that will weaken the overall structure and this increases the chances of the tooth cracking or failing. Composite resin and porcelain fillings will not react or change shape, but instead can be strongly bonded to your teeth, restoring the tooth in a way that is strong and biocompatible to improve your dental health.

We also prepare teeth slightly differently for amalgam free restorations, as we only need to remove damaged areas of your tooth, leaving more of the healthy tooth intact. With an amalgam filling it is necessary to remove more tooth structure in preparation for a filling.

What Is the Best Toothbrush and Toothpaste to Use?

We recommend using a soft to medium bristled toothbrush and make sure you don’t brush too hard as you could damage your teeth and gums. With the proper technique, you should be able to get your teeth nice and clean without using excessive pressure. Make sure you brush for at least two minutes and pay attention while you brush, so you don’t miss out any areas. It doesn’t matter if you use a manual or electric brush as both will work perfectly well when used correctly. Use fluoride toothpaste and spit out the excess but don’t rinse as this will help maximise the efficacy of fluoride.

What Is a Good Daily Oral Hygiene Routine?

At a minimum, you should brush at least twice a day, preferably when you get up and just before you go to bed. The reason for brushing at these times is because your mouth is drier overnight as you produce less saliva. A drier mouth is a good environment for bacteria to thrive. Removing the bacteria that build up during the day, as well as any particles of food will help ensure your mouth is as clean as possible before you go to sleep. Brushing first thing in the morning is a great way to freshen your mouth and your breath.

How Often Should I Floss?

You must floss once a day as it’s vital for healthy gums and it’s best to do this last thing at night. If you struggle with flossing, please ask us for help. We can suggest different techniques to try or even different tools such as interdental brushes.

Why Might My Child Need a Mouth Guard?

Every year there are thousands of dental related injuries due to playing sports. These injuries can result in chipped or broken teeth or even in teeth being knocked out completely. They can also affect the jaws. When a child wears a well-fitting mouth guard, these injuries can be minimised or in some cases avoided completely. If your child loves to play sports, then it’s worth asking Tooth Savers about a custom fitted mouth guard. Ideally, a mouth guard should be worn when playing any sport where an injury could occur. This includes contact and some non-contact sports.

What Is a Mouth Guard?

Our custom-made guards are made from a tough thermoplastic material that will fit exactly over your child’s upper teeth. The mouth guard will be made from an odourless and neutral tasting material, it should be comfortable to wear and will not hinder breathing. We can design the mouth guard so it is thickened in critical areas so your child will gain maximum protection when wearing this appliance. Sports mouth guards also come in lots of designs and colours which make them a bit more fun to wear.

How Is a Mouth Guard Made?

Fabricating a custom-made mouth guard is very straightforward, and we will simply need to take an impression of your child’s mouth. The mouth guard will be made to our prescription in our dental laboratory and can be fitted and adjusted if necessary during a follow-up appointment at Tooth Savers. We will check the condition of the mouth guard at regular intervals to make sure it doesn’t have any rips or tears and is still fitting correctly.

Mouth guards are very easy to look after as they simply need rinsing thoroughly after each use to make sure they are clean before they are stored in the perforated case provided by our dental practice. Just make sure you store the mouth guard away from direct heat as this could distort it.

We are located at Shop 36, 11-13 Main St, Mount Annan NSW 2567. You can contact us on (02) 4647 5555.
